New Yorkers, Do as the Brits Do

Tap in to your inner anglophile and enjoy the tastes of England on this side of the pond, right here in New York City.

Tea & Sympathy
108 Greenwich Ave. / Greenwich Village
212-989-9735

Welsh rarebit, scotch egg, Shepherd's pie, the've got it all at Tea & Sympathy, a quaint little English restaurant right in the heart of Greenwich Village. It's been a neighborhood favorite for years.  On the weekends, they serve an authentic full English breakfast (or shall we say Sunday dinner), a rare find in New York City. Any New Yorker who knows what bubble and squeak is will truly appreciate this find. They don't take reservations and the place is rather small, so get there early with your entire party. Can't get enough? Stop on by the adjoining market for some treats to take home.

Myers of Keswick
634 Hudson Street / West Village
212-691-4194

This city is full of bodegas and generic supermarkets, but here's one you don't want to walk right past, Myers of Keswick--it's a traditional British supermarket where you can get your favorite English candies, chocolates, and even the ever popular cumberland sausages and sausage rolls that are staples to the Brits. Hankering for some pies, pasties, biscuits, Cadbury treats, or Digestives? They have it. Don't know what these are? Go on over anyway and get a lesson from the Brits.

Palm Court at the Plaza Hotel
5th Ave at Central Park South

Alice's Tea Cup
Various locations
Afternoon tea is an English tradition that even New Yorkers have adopted… okay, maybe not quite. However, if you wanted to enjoy tea time like the English do, complete with scones, clotted cream and finger sandwiches, you could! For a more formal tea time setting, check out Palm Court at the Plaza Hotel from 2pm to 5pm, as afternoon tea is served daily. There are four styles of afternoon tea, and we know at least one comes with champagne (Yeah, get that one!). For a less formal and more fun ambience, head on over to Alice's Tea Cup. While it's like stepping into an Alice in Wonderland dream at first glance, the endless selection of scones and teas will be what keeps you coming back.

Their Historical Royal Palaces collection provides English tea blends for you to enjoy--they also make wonderful gifts. Stop by the Soho location for suggestions and tips from their expert staff.

Jones Wood Foundry

212-249-2700

Whether you're longing for your grandmother's shepherd's pie or want to be introduced to old English cuisine, Jones Wood Foundry is the place to go. Okay, maybe it's neither, and you just want a great neighborhood pub to hang out in with a nicely curated beer list and great ambiance, Jones Wood Foundry is still your place. Situated on the Upper East Side, where "cool hangs" are pretty sparse, it's a great spot for English comfort food and brews… and wine cocktails, if that strikes your fancy.
