Open House: How To Buy Art

Purchasing a new painting or sculpture for your home can seem like an intimidating experience, especially for budding collectors who are new to the gallery scene. But art lovers need not be frightened thanks to these basic pointers from contemporary art consultant Emily Greenspan of Tag-Arts.

The Hunt: More Space on the UWS

Like most New Yorkers, physical therapist Andrew Flicker could use more space. His girlfriend Lisa recently moved in to his studio, so he's on a quest for a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment on the Upper West Side that's near his patients. Halstead broker Brian Lewis has shown the happy couple a slew of potential residences while zipping around the city on Andrew's moped, but will he finally be able to win them over with these two homes? Find out if Andrew picks a sunny, first-floor pad or a classic charmer with a rooftop garden by Riverside Park.

Hollywood writer and producer Ryan Murphy (Popular, Running With Scissors, Nip/Tuck, Glee) has re-listed his home high in the hills above the legendary Chateau Marmont hotel, according to a report by the Realestalker. Modern master Carl Maston designed the classic bungalow for his own family, and the relatively modest property—three bedrooms and three bathrooms cover just over 3,000 square feet—has been painstakingly remodeled, most evidently in the sleek, stainless steel kitchen and poured concrete floors throughout. Long, lean lines, warm, wand plenty of floor-to-ceiling glass windows are dead giveaways of Maston's iconic style. Sleek cabinetry, cool colors, and a few in-ground pools help bring things up to speed.

First purchased in 2001, Murphy made an initial attempt to sell his gem for $4,195,000 in 2008. A couple of buyer-free years—not to mention, his recent purchase of Diane Keaton's residence in Beverly Hills—have inspired Murphy to drop his asking price significantly to $3,250,000. Takers?
