Behold! The Utterly Pointless Teaser for Johnny Depp's “Rango”

Gore Verbinski has become wealthy and powerful as director of each installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise. And with that comes a certain amount of artistic freedom, but the trailer for his upcoming film is beyond the pale.

"Pirates" star Johnny Depp gives his voice to the title character, a household pet on a journey of personal discovery, leading a talented cast that also includes Abigail Breslin, Bill Nighy, Isla Fisher and the criminal underused Stephen Root.

The film will be "a CG animation/motion-capture hybrid movie," according to MTV, who last summer talked to Nighy about the project. The English actor said he plays a rattlesnake assassin (not someone who assassinates rattlesnakes, but rather...) with a machine-gun tail, and mentioned that it may end up being called "Cheap as Dirt." Apparently not.

If the trailer and the scraps of news that have come out about this project aren't enough to hold your interest until the film's March 2011 release, visit the official website -- it's even less helpful.
