So long, "At the Mountains of Madness." Hello, "Pacific Rim."
"We started developing PAC RIM a while ago with the mad passion and enthusiasm of a project unwatched and unchecked by politics or comparisons," said Del Toro in statement from Legendary Pictures, who will produce the picture. "We designed and shepherded the movie we want to make. We start shooting in September and we hit the ground running because we are so in sync. My partnership with Legendary represents, both in scale and creative demands, a huge step forward for me."
"Pacific Rim," written by Traivs Beachem (both "Clash" and "Wrath of the Titans") is set in the future, in a time when the people of the world must band together to beat back a common enemy, and is believed to have tentpole potential. The film is slated for a release in Summer 2013.
But fret not, Lovecraft fans, as Del Toro and Cruise still hope to make "At the Madness of Mountains" at some point down the road.
"I spoke to Tom, who has been incredibly supportive and who said, ‘Let’s keep going, let’s make this movie down the road,’ Del Toro told Deadline. "He’s definitely that interested and that happy where we were creatively. So we have good legs to travel on, if the time and the opportunity present itself."
