Anthony Edwards Flips To Bad Guy in "Flipped"

When you settle into Rob Reiner's new love story "Flipped" and see Anthony Edwards on the screen, you might think it's going to be another heartwarming role for the former "E.R." star.

Think again. Reiner turns Edwards' lovable persona on its head. Edwards plays the snobby, close-minded and frankly obnoxious father on the block in the story of young love set in the early 60s.

Hey man, you're messing with Goose!

In fact, it was Edwards' general ability to come across as a great guy in projects such as "E.R." "Top Gun" and "Revenge of the Nerds" that made Reiner want to turn him about.

"He's such a good guy," says Reiner. "I thought he could play that role and not make the character so ugly and uncomfortable that you couldn't take him in."

It's not the first time the two have worked together. Edwards played John Cusack's best friend in 1985's "The Sure Thing" which was directed by Reiner. That was so long ago that Edwards has a famous line where he talks about the wonders of speaking on a cordless phone.

As far as the dark side in "Flipped," Reiner felt that Edwards was "amazing." In fact, he convinced Reiner to allow his character to always have a subtle alcoholic drink in his hand at all times.

"He had a great instinct about it," says Reiner.
