For a guy who took the same tough guy role from the British soccer field to the British big screen -- Vinnie Jones is pushing his improbable acting gig into extra time.

Jones has made the move onto American television, signing on for NBC's "The Cape" as a series regular, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

He'll play a powerful criminal named Scales in the midseason drama. Scales is described as a man with a freakish skin condition that gives him the appearance of green and gold scales.

While the part is new, working into the criminal mind is not new for the Welsh-born Jones. He's a veteran of Guy Ritchie's criminal movies after a huge-breakout part in "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" (1998). He even managed to establish a catch phrase moment as Big Chris.

"It's been emotional," he said with his other trademark, the furrowed brow.

He returned for Ritchie's "Snatch" (2000) with the same demeanor and a new fun nickname -- Bullet Tooth Tony. He hasn't shown the greatest range, but then again, attempting range might not be the best idea. I actually saw him perform at a charity function at Shakespeare's Globe Theater and, to his credit, he still did the Bard by way of Vinnie Jones. He'll likely not bend too much on network television.

"The Cape" is about a cop framed for murder and presumed dead who assumes the identity of his son's favorite comic book hero while waging war against those who wronged him.
