Apple Supplier Foxconn May Build U.S. Plant

Hon Hai Precision Industry, also known as Foxconn and one of Apple's main suppliers, plans on building a U.S. plant to focus on the American market, according to a report.

The Taiwanese company is in talks to build a $40 million advanced display manufacturing plant in Pennsylvania, according to CNBC. Hon Hai gets almost half of its revenue from assembling iPhones and other electronic devices for Apple.

"Automation, software and technology innovation will be our key focus in the U.S. in the coming few years," Hon Hai chairman Terry Gou said at the company's 40th anniversary.

Hon Hai is deciding if it should build a "10th generation panel manufacturing plant"  that would produce screens more than five feet across. Shipping such large screens from Asia wouldn't be cost effective, so the company has expressed interest in Pennsylvania and wanted to build a manufacturing plant in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University.

The move makes sense, especially after knowing that Hon Hai has created production facilities in 10 other countries including Turkey, Brazil ,Mexico and Hungary, likely where shipping would also be expensive. In order to cut costs and fight rising labor costs, Hon Hai also plans to move most of its production to Indonesia and outsourcing Chinese jobs.
