Google updated the Google Play app Thursday, adding support for book rentals and textbooks, according to MacRumors. The app is available on both Android and iOS, and Apple is supposedly creating new iPad integration and options with the release of iOS 7.
The update will also bring highlighting, note-taking, sepia reading mode and performance improvements.
We wrote about Google's announcement that it would start textbooks for sale or rent last month, promising up to 80 percent discounts. The announcement seemed to be an attempt to battle Amazon.com over the textbook market, which also sells and rents textbooks to students. While Apple has battled Amazon over the e-book market, Google seems to be the only tech titan willing to compete in both e-book and hard copy, sales and rentals.
