Twitter's Jack Dorsey Named to Disney Board

The Walt Disney company announced it elected Jack Dorsey, Twitter's cofounder and chief executive of Square, to its board today.

“Jack Dorsey is a talented entrepreneur who has helped create groundbreaking new businesses in the social media and commerce spaces,” Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement to the press. “The perspective he brings to Disney and its Board is extremely valuable, given our strategic priorities, which include utilizing the latest technologies and platforms to reach more people and to enhance the relationship we have with our customers.”

Dorsey said he was "honored and humbled" to be named to the board. “Disney is a timeless company, one we all grow up learning from and admiring," he said.

Dorsey is not only one of the founders of Twitter, but also the company's chairman. He also founded Square, a mobile payment service that can be used on an iPhone or iPad, in 2009.

Dorsey joins Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg who also sits on Disney's board.

TechCrunch says that Dorsey wants to emulate Apple icon and founder Steve Jobs, and with this move he is. Jobs was also on Disney's board, after he sold Pixar to Disney in 2006.

Disney is still a name in media, too, so it doesn't hurt Twitter or Square to have one of its chief executives involved with the company.
