Samsung Puts Ice Cream Sandwich on Galaxy Tab 2

Look what the cat dragged in. Samsung's finally given its first 7-inch Galaxy Tab Android tablet a proper successor with sharper screen, an additional camera and the delicious Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Talk about long overdue update.

We might not have had the kindest words to say about the original Galaxy Tab back in 2010, but it's undeniable that it paved the way for 7-inch tablets to go up against the iPad.

Since the Tab, Samsung's done nothing but make tablets in every size imaginable. We took a look at the Galaxy Tab 8.9 back in October.

New on the 10.5mm thick Galaxy Tab 2 is a 1GHz dual-core processor (up from a single core), 1024x600 PLS LCD display and 1GB of RAM (up from 512MB). In addition to the 3-megapixel camera on the rear is a VGA (640x480) front-facing camera for video chatting, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, a microSD slot and a 4,000 mAh battery.

Of course, the star is going to be Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Like all Galaxy Tab tablets and Galaxy smartphones, Samsung's TouchWiz skin will sit on top of Android 4.0. What a good way to give the ICS train a boost for some Chrome for Android Web browser lovin'.

Tablet hounds will notice that the bezel sports a slight girth on the top and bottom as it does on the Galaxy 10.1N. It's a slight cosmetic design that won't hamper usage in any way, but will help ol' Sammy avoid more courtroom battles with Apple over patent designs. I'm not digging it, but that's the minimalist in me speaking.

Thus far, pricing has only been announced for Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and the U.K., but expect news for other regions to be unveiled soon. Wi-Fi models look to cost about $420 to $463 (converted), whereas 3G models hover in the $523 to $556 (converted) region. Release should be sometime in March.
