The Bay Bridge Gets Its Own App

As the Bay Bridge gets ready for yet another change come Memorial Day weekend, drivers can now prepare for the shift virtually.

Caltrans has put out an app that helps you navigate the ever-changing Bay Bridge until its completion in 2013.

Bay Bridge Explorer is a free app for the iPad and iPhone that takes drivers on a digital version of the bridge that looks pretty close to the real thing.

The reason for developing the app is to reach a segment of bridge traffic that doesn't watch television and may not get status updates about bridge construction through traditional media.

Mashable reports that Caltrans also has collected data from previous Memorial weekend shut downs that the traffic that tends to go into the City on that weekend are young, tech-savvy people who like to go to clubs and restaurants.

The app gets updated to reflect new changes or traffic diversions on the bridge.
