Frugal Entertainment

The celebration in San Francisco's streets following the Giants' World Series victory started off peaceful but quickly turned raucous and violent, as revelers vandalized police cars and businesses and pelted officers with bottles. Mark Matthews reports. (Published Thursday, Oct 30, 2014)

The Brown inaugural is under way, with the Pledge of Allegiance, just recited by student from a military-themed charter school that Brown founded.

This reflects the frugality of a simple ceremony: Brown had instructed that there be no paid entertainment, in a nod to the times and the budget. Now, an Oakland school choir is performing the national anthem. Beautifully, I might add.
