Giants Closer Becomes Crossword Answer

Brian Wilson has a World Series ring, a super-famous beard and a solid spot on many a late-night talk show.  But his biggest accomplishment just may be in black and white today:  Wilson is an answer in the New York Times crossword puzzle.

Check 30 down (Wilson reportedly wanted 38 down -- that's his number -- but life's not totally perfect) Thursday morning:  "Giants hurler/Beach Boys vocalist on "Help Me Rhonda."

Those who follow the Giants super closely tell me Wilson is a huge crossword puzzle fan, who has long dreamed of being an answer.  Since he's injured, he'll have extra time to open the paper and do the puzzle.

He'll also have time to write thank-you notes to Tyler Hinman, a Google engineer and helper of NYT crossword guru Will Shortz.  Hinman, according to legend, wrote Shortz an email with the Wilson idea.  It was backed up by Jeremy Horwitz, a professor at Santa Clara University who's also part of the puzzle posse.  One thing led to another, and Wilson's immortalized in the Times.

A cool thing about the Brian Wilson Beach Boys nod:  It's part of a theme, including other pitcher/musician mashups.  We won't spoil it by giving you the answers, but it's worth checking out.

Fear The Beard.  Enjoy the puzzle.
