Clay Hensley Signs With Giants: Report

Just when you thought the Giants were close to finished with their big, sweeping offseason moves, they went out and and signed Clay Hensley.

That's according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, who reports that Hensley signed on for a base salary of $750,000 with $300,000 available in incentive money.

Hensley's probably best known in San Francisco for ... this:

Yes, Hensley's the guy who gave up Barry Bonds' record-tying home run. He's also the guy who gave up a lot more runs in 2011 than 2010: after posting a superb 2.16 ERA with the Marlins in 2010, Hensley's ERA ballooned to 5.19 last season.

He did start nine games (only his third season doing so), so maybe that factors in as well.

The 32-year-old right hander was originally drafted by the Giants in the 8th round of the 2002 MLB Draft. Now he returns home.

Will he be the bullpen version of Ryan Vogelsong? That would be pretty swell for the Giants.

There was some chatter on Thursday night that Hensley could slot into the rotation and bump Dan Runzler from his spot, but it seems more likely that he'll be a reliever who'll get some starts should injuries ravage the pitching staff again in 2011.
