Happy 100th, Devils Postpile

CENTENNIAL TIME: There are many true things to be said about Devils Postpile National Monument, which is located just a pinch away from Mammoth in Madera County ("just a pinch away" is relative in Sierra Nevada terms, of course). One: Devils Postpile is striking. If we called it about the column-iest of all national monuments anywhere, we doubt anyone would quibble with us. (Those famous columns are columnar basalt, but we bet you already knew that.) Two: Devils Postpile National Monument may opening for its 100th season on Wednesday, June 29, but we all understand it is much older than that. Much, much older. If we were to add fifty more muches to the front of that statement, we doubt anyone would quibble with us.

AND THREE? You'll want to make time to see Rainbow Falls when you're in the area. If you have a long weekend this summer, and haven't firmed up your getaway yet, and you like rather odd, 60-foot-tall naturally occurring columns that are highly symmetrical, make for Highway 395. We've said it before: 395 is a great stretch of California-y wonderdom, and we doubt anyone would quibble with us over that.
