BEYOND THE WINDSHIELD: You've likely, at some point, driven up to Morro Rock, if you have lived in California for any length of time. Perhaps you've even gotten out of the car to stretch a leg. Maybe you even brought your bike. All good and worthy endeavors -- any method in which one choose to commune with the epic rock* is a find method -- but there are others. Like kayaking near the ancient landmark. Like sipping wine on the dunes, and enjoying a picnic lunch. Like making a bit of a day of it, instead of a harried just-passing-through of it. Lone Madrone is organizing a day of it, complete with wine and eats, on Saturday, Sept. 17. It's the wine house's annual Lunch on the Dunes.
"BEACH-STYLE LUNCH": The Paso Robles-based vineyard promises a beach-style lunch, complete with its signature vinos. This sandy supping comes post-paddle, of course; you'll be able to discuss the fowl and flora and fauna you've seen out on the bay. And that rock, of course. Now. We asterisked the word "rock" above but we know -- of course we know -- that Morro Rock is actually a volcanic plug. Until Morro Bay decides to officially change its famous symbol's moniker, however, "rock" works. But. If you want to be dropping the whole "volcanic plug" bit while paddling, do it. Lunch on the Dunes is $95 per person.
