Palm Springs Budget Go-Outs

The visitors bureau rounded up some great places to see with little dough.

COOL DOWN: When we face fall, we face some changes in where we go on trips around the Golden State. And one of the biggest changes in the vacation realm is the fact that, with the coming cool-down, people begin to think about a desert weekend. Us? We love Palm Springs in June, and have said so several times in this space -- nothing beats sitting under a mister, with a refreshing beverage in hand, at 10 o'clock at night -- but we recognize that autumn and wintertime are the top seasons for the desert resorts. The Palm Springs Follies start back up, the rock-bottom deals of hotel deals of summer get a little scarcer, and the restaurants fill up. So we were delighted when the Palm Springs visitors bureau rounded up five budget-minded things to do around the area, and just in time for the desert's busier season.

MUSEUM, NATURE, MORE: The suggestions round-up runs the gamut -- we love it when suggestions round-ups do that -- but it does include a few headlines. The Palm Springs Art Museum made the cut; and if you're there on a Thursday afternoon and evening, admission is free. Likewise, the beautiful Moorten's Botanical Garden, pictured above, almost feels undersea in parts, thanks to its unusual array of cacti and succulents. The other suggestions include an arts district, a self-guided architecture tour, and the Village Green Heritage Center (looove this place so much we just put three o's in the word "love"). It's all handy information now that the busier season is set to begin in the desert, and those summer deals'll be fewer. Save a few dollars where we can and enjoy doing so, too.
