World Oceans Day in Monterey

WATER WONDERFUL: World Oceans Day -- which falls on June 8 in 2011 -- is observed in lots of different ways in lots of parts of the world. But maybe "observed" isn't exactly the right word. It is a day of education, and of work, and of volunteer service. And a day of some fun, too. And on Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5, Monterey Bay Aquarium will be emphasizing the "education" and "fun" bits with two days of activities and talks and Seussian pleasures. We mention Dr. Seuss because "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" will be read, and that's reason enough to go.

ALSO ON THE PLATE: Sustainable seafood demos, a performance by the Banana Slug String Band, and the screening of shorts that have ocean-care as their central themes. Oh, and "special animal feeding shows." Again, reason enough to go. An adult ticket is $29.95.

IF YOU CAN'T MAKE MONTEREY... Bet there's a Worlds Ocean Day event near you, or near-ish. The site has a handy round-up of activities and clean-ups happening round the globe.
