An Enchanted Evening at Hearst Castle

SUPPER SWANK: You've been to Hearst Castle. You arrived in, what? Jean shorts? A tank top? That's cool. You probably enjoyed those special and especially sweet San Simeon breezes on your shoulders and legs. But you likely also fantasized about being back in the '30s, wearing a tux or a bejeweled gown, as you toured about the opulent grounds. Or was that only us? Couldn't have been. Everyone but everyone feels a little fancier atop Enchanted Hill, and when the castle's annual fundraiser rolls around, there's a chance to get frou-frou and live it up. Oh goodness, and look at that: Enchanted Evening is due on Saturday, Sept. 24. Meaning? It is time to be-swank yourself and party like its 1932.

THE EVENTS: A posh dinner, wine on the flow, music by St. Louis Jazz Band, and synchronized swimming in the Neptune Pool are all on the menu. Synchronized swimming in one of the world's most photographed pools? Fills one with joy, really. Black tie is required, or lovely vintage duds. We say gussy up like a guest of Mr. Hearst, down to the sequin and feather headband or polished walking stick. A ticket is $300 for a member, $350 for a non-member. And, after all the happy-schmoozing and sunset-gazing and flute-sipping, know that you'll be helping out a house that everyone should see once. Or twice. We mean thrice. At least thrice. Maybe quadrice? Even quince?

ALSO... Have you tried the new tours? There are three of 'em, and they kicked off on June 29. The Grand Rooms Tour, the Upstairs Tour, and the Cottages and Kitchens Tour. Also, wandering about the gardens and terraces on your own schedule following the tour is now permitted. Hip hip hooray! We mean Hearst Heart Hooray!
