Big Sur Escape: Post Ranch Inn Reopens

The luxe getaway isn't yet accessible by car, but there's another way into the ocean-close hotel.

A BIG BIG SUR EVENT: If you've ever sat inside Sierra Mar, the window-lined restaurant at Post Ranch Inn, you may have kept your eyes, well, on your plate, since the eatery is known for beautifully crafted locally sourced eats. But, on occasion, you probably raised your face to the west, and the windows, to see if you could spy what is, unarguably, the most famous resident 'round Big Sur: the California condor. The major-of-wing-span birds can sometimes be seen soaring just beyond Sierra Mar's cliff-top perch, giving diners a bit of a thrilling, coastal-cool show. But the condor isn't the only sight in the bright blue expanse nowadays, thanks to a new Post Ranch Inn package called Escape Through the Skies. That's right...

POST RANCH INN... is now open again, as of April 20, after being shuttered for several weeks due to the Highway 1 havoc caused by a rash of intense winter storms. Because of the road closures, the luxe property is still unreachable by car, and Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge's much-anticipated completion is months away, but Post Ranch has crafted a memorable way for guests to reach the idyllic spot: by air. The package includes "...roundtrip helicopter transportation for two from Monterey," as well as dining at Sierra Mar and your accommodations. You'll need to stay for two nights, or more, and you'll need to do so in April or May. As far as how long the helicopter ride takes? It's twenty minutes, and you'll enjoy a glass of bubbly before lift-off. And, yes, if you're wondering, Post Ranch Inn's equally iconic down-the-road neighbor, Nepenthe, is also open again. For a singular adventure, to give some love to a favorite hotel, its restaurant, and nearby Nepenthe after this challenging winter, and to, just maybe, spy a condor riding a breeze while you're supping at Sierra Mar, start here.
