Giant Bike Expo: Sea Otter Classic

The everything-cycle spectacular pedals into Monterey.

EVEN IF... your favorite two-wheeler has taken on a few webs over the wintertime, and some boxes of holiday decorations got placed in front of it, effectively hiding it for a handful of months, you know this much: Springtime changes everything. We only need glance around us, at the flowering world, and we only need explore our own awakening sensations, sensations that tell us to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. It's lucky, then, that "North America's Largest Bike Expo" is just on the horizon, further inspiring us to pull our cycle out of the corner of the garage and get pedaling. There'll be plenty of pedaling in and around Monterey from Thursday, April 14 through Sunday, April 17 when the Subaru Sea Otter Classic unfurls with a multitude of events for the tens of thousands of bike buffs who show up.

THOSE HUGE HAPPENINGS INCLUDE... the 2016 Gran Fondo, which boasts not one but two rides, a shorter (at 51 miles) wend near the coast and one that's closer to a century (hello, 92 miles) into hillsome Carmel Valley. There's also a mountain-oriented Gran Fondo that pays a visit to Ford Ord National Monument. The Sea Otter isn't solely about rides of notable distance, however; there are kid-focused fun times, with a Bike Play Zone (complete with obstacles) and a mountain bike day camp for girls ages 8 to 13.

AND AS FOR THAT HUGE EXPO? Count 'em up: Over 400 exhibitors will spread out with all sorts of cycling goods, info, products, and such. Will this inspire you to blow the webs off your wheels? Take it for a first spring spin? Or have you been keeping to your ride schedule all winter long? Either way, the famous Sea Otter, one of the biggest of the big bike bashes, can stretch your legs (and inspiration).
