THE HARVEST WINE DOWN, er, wind down, is full of time-honored rituals, stirring spoken tributes and commemorations, and many winemakers who are ready to contemplatively gaze back upon a hectic few months. How the wine down — we mean wind down, of course — unfurls, however, is very much dependent upon the winery or wine country in question. Some spots are ready for a brief and well-earned respite, while other vineyards are already pushing straight into the holiday events and ho-ho-ho-themed marketplaces. It's never a once-size-fits-all kind of thing, the end of harvest, but if you were to swing through SLO country, 'round about the start of November, you might find some revelers sipping a piquant pinot not far from the beach, all to grandly mark the closing of the 2017 harvest-time door. HARVEST ON THE COAST: The three-day affair — it beams like sunshine from Friday, Nov. 3 through Sunday, Nov. 5 — will include Crafted on the Coast, a "collaborative winemaker dinner" on Friday, Surf's Up Sunday to round it all out (think deals and tunes at various tasting rooms of SLO Wine Country members), and the marquee event, the Grand Tasting and Wine Auction on Saturday. There shall be "artisan foods" and hard-to-find vinos and, of course, tastes you'll likely talk about, at length, with those tasting alongside you (if talking at length about a single sip of wine is your particular jam).
