Nevada City Film Festival: September Cinematic

Great movies, a parade, a duck race, and a camping package are all on the happy horizon.

IN THE WORLD OF A MOVIE? Everything seemingly happens at once, or, at the very least, within a fairly tight window of time. That isn't always the case when it comes to life on this side of the silver screen, however, and it isn't always the case when it comes to a multi-day film festival. Very often the film festival is the sole happening in the area, the centerpiece of a town's week, and while that is beyond a-ok — people want to watch a lot of movies — finding stuff to do beyond the cinema can be a mite tricky. This, however, is not the case in always-interesting, march-to-its-own-beat Nevada City. The Sierra Foothills destination has an excellent movie party in the annual Nevada City Film Festival, a late-summer staple on the local cultural calendar, but several happenings are occurring at the same time as the festival, either nearby or fairly nearby. Consider that during the festival's upcoming 2017 run, which is scheduled for...

FRIDAY, SEPT. 8 THROUGH FRIDAY, SEPT. 15, the 51st Constitution Parade will march (this is the procession with the Marching Presidents), the Gold Country Duck Race will float at Duck Creek, and there's some living history, with a look-back at the Revolutionary War, in Pioneer Park, and live big band music downtown. That's in addition to the packed slate of cinematic goodies, which include "A Trip to the Moon" (yep, the early-early Georges Méliès cosmic gem) and the documentary "Bill Nye: Science Guy." The science-loving superstar will also be in town for the screening, too, oh yes he will. As for where to stay? Check it out: There's a package on with the Inn Town Campground, which gives campers a pair of festival passes, at a big savings, to the 17th annual outing of the reel deal. The package dates? Sept. 7 through 16, so call the campground and set up your cinema-loving stay.
