PICTURE POSTCARD: Whenever we see a contemporary take on Christmas or a modern spin on holiday merriment, well. We're enchanted. We like the minimalist trees and gewgaws and such. But, honest? We tend to return to the classic ways a lot of people mark late November and early December. What do we mean by the rather vague "classic ways"? 1. Gingerbread villages. 2. Twinkly lights. 3. Grand, applause-laden tree lightings. 4. Carolers. 5. Snowmen. Oh, we should have said "in no particular order" there, because we do want and expect all of them during the yuletide season. And if the whole caboodle happens to boast a fir-pretty mountain setting? Say not too far from Lake Tahoe, which always looks as if it should be on the front of a holiday card, regardless of the time of year? Happiness. The Resort at Squaw Creek has several of those goodies going, plus a few mountain-nice happenings, during its "Magical Memories" Holiday Celebration.

NOV. 23 THROUGH JAN. 6: Olympic Gold Medalist Jonny Moseley will flip the big tree's switch on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Then? The festivities get rolling. The property's famous Gingerbread Village will be on display, Santa and Mrs. Claus'll be calling, and moonlight snowshoe adventures and outdoorsy s'mores will be enjoyed (there are the mountain-nice bits we foreshadowed earlier). It's a good long run through the season, but if you want a stay-over deal, best get to the Resort at Squaw Creek between Nov. 22 and Dec. 13 for the Magical Bed & Breakfast package. The upshot? Deluxe rooms start at $199, and the morning meal is included for up to two adults and two kids. Code is MAGICRSC. We love holiday deals, too, so we'll add that to our list of cheer.
