Company Buys Batkid Documentary, Film to be Distributed in Theaters

New Line Cinema has bought worldwide distribution rights to “Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World,” which means the Bay Area-made film will hit the Big Screen.

Warner Bros. Pictures, which owns New Line, will distribute the documentary and plans to release it in the coming year.

Oscar winner Julia Roberts said she has "attached" herself to the movie, meaning she has plans to star and produce it.

The film will be overseen by Michael Disco and Josh Mack at New Line, with Dana Nachman of Los Altos executive producing along with Josh Braun and Dan Braun through their Sub/Version documentary remake label. NBC Bay Area's Liza Meak also helped produce the film.

The documentary depicts how San Francisco became Gotham City for a day to grant the wish of then-5-year-old leukemia patient, Miles Scott.

The documentary also debuted at the Slamdance Film Festival in Utah and also at San Jose's Cinequest, where it won the "Documentary Audience" award.
