Cat cafes have arrived in the South Bay.
The Dancing Cat is San Jose's first cafe to offer feline adoption — or just some temporary companionship while having a snack. According to the website, 25 cats were adopted on first opening.
The cafe is open from Thursday through Sunday. It's also open for adoptions by appointment on Wednesdays. One-hour sessions of hanging with kitties are booked in advance; WiFi and catnip are free.
The Dancing Cat's location on East Julian Street is temporary until November; host organization Karma Cat Rescue is soliciting donations to help this project find a permanent home.
The business model of cats plus caffeine has some early success stories locally.
San Francisco's KitTea Cafe adopted out 17 cats in its first month, while Oakland's Cat Town Cafe and Adoption Center adopted out 184 cats in the first seven months of business, which brought the euthanasia rate at partner organization Oakland Animal Services down from 41 to 21 percent.
