Suisun City Troupe Dances on America's Got Talent

A Suisun City dance company is hoping that the public will vote Tuesday night for its hip hop performers to win America’s Got Talent and take home $1 million and a contract for its own show.

"We're feeling really good," said Chapkis Dance Family owner and choreographer Greg Chapkis from New York City, where his troupe is poised to perform.

Still, Chapkis said he's nervous: "We're the last dance act of the show. I'm not sure Americans like the dance acts."

But he said his dance act is different. "We take a different approach," said the Ukrainian born artist. "We put on a show. We tell a story. Hopefully it will pay off."

The public has a chance to vote for any one of the 20 teams left in the competition, which airs on NBC at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

If the team gets the most votes, the 32 dancers will then move on to the semifinals. The dancers are the only Bay Area-based group left in the competition. Most of the dancers come from Solano County, Sacramento or the Bay Area.

It’s not the first time the Chapkis dancer s have made it to America’s Got Talent, now in its 10th season. Chapkis' company earned a spot on the show in 2009.

The team took first place in the Mega Crew, Junior and Varsity divisions of Hip Hop International 2014, and all three teams went on to represent Team USA in the World Competition that year. They were finalists in the 2015 World Finals.

Chapkis Dance Family also represented Team USA at the 2014 Dance2dance competition in Zurich, Switzerland and will return to defend their first place title this year.
