Before Kim announced her split from Kris she dressed up as Batman and Robin villain Poison Ivy and hosted a festive bash in New York City. When asked if she planned on dressing up with Humphries, Kim replied, "Actually, I'm going to be in Australia for the real Halloween, so I won't be able to dress up with Kris this year."

It's here -- albeit shockingly sooner than expected -- the divorce of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries.

Admit it, you were drawn in by the so-called fairy tale. The couple's whirlwind romance began in December and their engagement followed soon after in May. When the August nuptials rolled around, the reality starlet and New Jersey Nets baller were a well-hyped package.

We all know the Spectacle Wedding when we see it, the televised ceremony, celebrity guest list and photographed honeymoon--the exchange of privacy and intimacy for money and more time in front of the camera. Kim supersized the genre, earning a reported $17 million from her two-night, four-hour “Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event” on E! Now her divorce is an anomaly too.

Anyone who Keeps Up with the Kardashians could have predicted this wasn’t going to be a marriage for the ages. But 72 days? That's barely two months. Less than one month when you start the clock after E!’s broadcast. Was Kim's honeymoon phase over before the honeymoon?

Ghosts of Spectacle Weddings Past live on in studio warehouses: Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey. Dave Navarro and Carmen Electra. Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt. Diana and Charles.

You could argue that there are a handful of success stories, among them Kim's sister Khloe and Lamar Odom, Kendra Wilkinson and Hank Baskett. But it remains to be seen if either couple is really the picture of matrimonial bliss.

The signs that Kim and Kris ventured down the wrong path were there in the tabloids. Throughout their six-month courtship Kim split her time between New York and LA, while Kris traveled with the Nets. Kim spent Valentine's Day at a nightclub in Las Vegas without Kris.

"It's kind of perfect!" she told Us Weekly.

Their wedding included 500 of their closest friends, with an invitation extended to the Lohan clan. A post-wedding trip to Italy came complete with a photographer for Us Weekly. The NBA lockout could have been a blessing in disguise for the pair, except that their time in New York was spent living with Kim's sister, her sister's boyfriend, and her nephew. Kim told People the situation was "not ideal."

The spectacle has served her well -- three television series and high-end boutiques launched from Kim's tireless work ethic and sex appeal. But the photo-ops that propelled her career didn't do much for her marriage.

Like most of us out in the real world have learned, relationships require time and patience and time and time. And if you spend more time working on your media coverage than your marriage, well...

And so, Kim and Kris' marriage collapsed under the spectacle, and ended, like so many others before it, with a statement to E!, "We remain friends and wish each other the best," and a faint hope that there is something left to be saved.

Hope you all enjoyed the show--there's sure to be another one soon enough.
