TMI Alert: David Arquette Tells All About Split With Cox

Actor tells Howard Stern he's in therapy trying to "grow up"

David Arquette unburdened himself to Howard Stern's audience on why he and Courteney Cox split, telling the shock jock they stopped having sex months ago and that she was sick of being his "mom."

The intimacy between the star couple ended around one month before they started shooting "Scream 4" in Michigan, Arquette, 39, said. Cox insisted they try separating right after their 11th wedding anniversary back in June ... after she told David that she was "tired of being your mother."

Cox., 46, told Arquette, "I don't wanna be your mother anymore,'" the actor recounted. "I appreciated that. I respected it. I've been going to therapy. I'm trying to grow up. I'm trying to be true to myself. Trying to figure out myself and my world, as is she."

Arquette said he was having a tough time with the breakup.

"It breaks my heart," he said of their decision to separate, adding that he is "not the one that called this [separation] in order." "I've been begging Courteney to get back with me," he later added. "She's conflicted too."

Arquette told Stern he never cheated on Courteney before the split -- but admitted bedding "one conquest" since.

"I am a single man," he said.

Arquette said he confronted Cox about reports she had gotten together with her "Cougar Town" costar Brian Van Holt, and she denied an affair.

"I do believe her ... I truly don't think she ever had an affair," he said, adding that if anything perhaps they formed an "emotional" bond.

The Tinseltown staple, who met on the set of the 1996 slasher flick “Scream” and tied the knot three years later, gave a joint statement before Arquette opened up to Stern.

“The reason for this separation is to better understand ourselves and the qualities we need in a partner and for our marriage,” Cox and Arquette said in their joint statement.

They also pledged to “remain best friends and responsible parents” to their 6-year-old daughter Coco, and added they still “love each other deeply.”

The pair, set to star opposite one another again next year in "Scream 4," has at times been the focus of tabloid and gossip site speculation on the state of their marriage.

"I want her to be happy," Arquette told Stern, "more than I want happiness for myself."
