Michelle Obama’s Wardrobe Choice Questioned by Oscar de la Renta

Naturally, there are a lot of politics in—well, politics, and apparently, a lot of politics in fashion, too.
First Lady Michelle Obama is usually lauded for her style. She wore a gorgeous red and black dress by Alexander McQueen (designed by new head Sarah Burton) to the recent State Dinner with Chinese President Hu Jintao.
There is one apparent—and very outspoken—critic to Michelle’s wardrobe choice: legendary designer Oscar de la Renta. The designer questioned her for wearing Alexander McQueen, a British design label, to the State Dinner, reports WWD.
“My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade,” de la Renta told WWD. “American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?”
This isn’t the first time de la Renta made comments about Michelle’s attire. “You don’t go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater,” he said in April of 2009.
