On The Download: Little Joy

Little Joy is the side project of Strokes drummer Fabrizio Morretti, his girlfriend Binki Shapiro, and Rodrigo Amarante of Brazilian indie-rock group Los Hermanos. Named for an LA area cocktail lounge, Little Joy sounds like a soundtrack for the perfect painless hangover.

Laid back with a tropicalia meets indie-rock groove, lead vocalist Amarante croons with a swagger not unlike Fab’s other frontman, Strokes lead singer Julian Casablancas. Meanwhile Shapiro, adds her delicate Bebel Gilberto-esque vocals to several tracks. Songs like “Brand New Start,” “No One’s Better sake,” and album opener, “The Next Time Around,” from first listen, already sound like old gems from your collection that you haven’t heard for years.

Little Joy’s debut is another great side project (see Strokes member Albert Hammond Jr.‘s latest “Como Te Llama”) by another member of one of the best modern rock bands around today.

If this is what the guys from the Strokes do in their spare time – I, for one, cannot wait to hear their next album!
