“7th Heaven” Actor Stephen Collins OK After Reports of Possible Gunfire

Police responded Tuesday night to the home of the actor who played a father and a priest on "7th Heaven"

"7th Heaven" actor Stephen Collins, who is under investigation for child molestation, was OK and not even home after reports of a possible sound of gunfire Tuesday at his Los Angeles home, police said.

The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call Tuesday evening at what is believed to be the Tarzana rental home of Collins after witnesses -- including journalists -- reported what was described to authorities as "a distinct pop."

Police were investigating whether the noise was a gunshot or some other sound. Authorities are taking all necessary precautions and established a perimeter around the residence.

NBC4 reporter Gadi Schwartz was on-scene and heard the sound.

Sources said it could be hours before police determine what, if anything, happened.

Earlier in the day, the NYPD confirmed they opened an investigation following a complaint about Collins and alleged child molestation that occurred 40 years ago. TMZ on Tuesday released a purported audio confession by Collins to alleged sexual abuse.

Law enforcement sources in Los Angeles say police investigated allegations made by Collins' ex-wife.

Sources say police were unable to complete a crime report due to the fact there was no verifiable victim.

LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman said Tuesday the department is taking another look.

"We are reviewing the case to make sure that we didn't miss anything and allow fresh eyes to take another look in light of the recent developments in New York," Neiman said.

Collins' ex-wife began divorce proceedings in 2012.
