Jimmy Kimmel's 3 1/2-hour search to find the right tone for an Academy Awards broadcast that uneasily mixed humor and politics ended appropriately: in mass confusion. The stunning, apparent "wrong-envelope" debacle in which favorite "La La Land" was announced as the best picture winner by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway – only to be given to "Moonlight" moments later – was the wildest conclusion in Oscars history, capping an awards show that dragged at times. "I knew I would screw this show up," Kimmel joked.

The 2017 Academy Awards was history-making after 'La La Land' was mistakenly announced as best picture when the prize was meant for 'Moonlight.' The casts switched places on stage as director Barry Jenkins took to the microphone and accepted the top prize. Also, both Viola Davis and Mahershala Ali took home an Oscar for best supporting actress and actor in a supporting role. After Viola Davis won her first Oscar, Oprah Winfrey tweeted, "Hallelujerrrrrrr! @violadavis ! " We are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life!""

<![CDATA[Lin-Manuel Miranda Is Just an Oscar Away From an EGOT]]> Sat, 25 Feb 2017 21:07:30 -0800 http://media.nbcbayarea.com/images/213*120/manuellin.jpg
If Lin-Manuel Miranda takes home the prize for best original song at Sunday night's Oscars, he will become the youngest person ever to EGOT: winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards. The "Hamilton" creator is nominated for writing music and lyrics for the song "How Far I'll Go," from the animated movie "Moana." The term "EGOT" was popularized in an episode of "30 Rock" in which Tracy Morgan's character, Tracy Jordan, dons a diamond-encrusted necklace with the letters EGOT that he says once belonged to "Miami Vice" star Philip Michael Thomas. And, as NBC News reports, Miranda also has a Pulitzer Prize, so technically he has the chance to PEGOT — something only Marvin Hamlisch and Richard Rodgers have achieved.
