Barbie Gets a Makeover, Wears Flats for the First Time

Barbie is kicking off her heels.

For the first time ever, Barbie will now be available with the option to wear flats in Mattel's new Fashionista line. It's the first time in Barbie's 56-year history she will have a flat option when it comes to footwear. The iconic doll has always been rocking heels since her creation.

Footwear isn't the only thing that's expanding in the Barbie line. The Fashionista line will also include, 23 dolls that feature 14 different facial sculpts, eight skin tones, 18 eye colors, 22 hairstyles, and 23 hair colors and fashions reflecting authentic street style.

Mattel's Barbie line continues to evolve, last year they announced an Entrepreneur Barbie, complete with a briefcase, cellphone and tablet. Mattel is even ahead of the Cannes Film Festival with the introduction of flats into Barbie's wardrobe. At the 2015 Festival women who wore flats to the event were reportedly turned away.

Although the line has evolved since its creation, many have critiqued Barbie's unrealistic proportions. Artist Nickolay Lamm created a doll inspired by Barbie, but added real-life qualities like cellulite and acne as well as expanded her frame to meet a more average weight.

Meanwhile others aspire to look like the iconic doll, like Human Barbie Valeria Lukyanova, who has altered her looks to replicate the plastic toy's aesthetic qualities.
