When the "Game of Thrones" creators were planning the TV show version of George R.R. Martin's epic book series, they knew they'd have to dabble in linguistics: Fictional languages were spoken throughout Westeros and the surrounding lands. So they held a contest for someone to create a fully formed language.
David J. Peterson, an Orange County, California resident who studied linguistics at UC Berkeley and UC San Diego, won the contest. And Dothraki and Valaryian, two languages now heard by millions on the popular TV show, were born.
How well do you know your Dothraki, the curse-laden language spoken by the Dothraki characters? Take the below quiz to find out. All translations in the quiz came from the DothraWiki, and were confirmed by Peterson. Even the incorrect answers appeared at some point in the show.
