Name the Los Angeles Zoo's Newest Baby Kangaroo

The "Name Our Roo" contest marks the first time in nearly 20 years that the public has been allowed to name an LA Zoo baby.

With each spring comes new life.

The Los Angeles Zoo is currently housing a bounty of babies — a baby hippo, koala, monkey, giraffe and more —  and it wants the public's help in naming the zoo's latest little one, a kangaroo joey.

"Since these newborns won’t be babies forever, we decided to highlight the excitement with a 'NameOurRoo' contest," said Laura Stegman, spokeswoman for the Greater LA Zoo Association.

"It's the first time in nearly 20 years that the general public has been offered the chance to name a baby animal at the LA Zoo," she added.

Now through April 26, visitors can submit a photo of the western gray kangaroo baby along with a potential name using the hashtag #NameOurRoo on Twitter, Instagram or the zoo's website.

The voting and judging process will be open to the public from April 27 to May 1. The winner who comes up with the best baby name will receive a GoPro Hero4 camera and a family deluxe zoo membership, according to a statement.

The "Name Our Roo" contest is part of the zoo's "Meet our Babies" program. Zoo-goers who visit now through the end of April will receive an activity guide containing fun facts and a map to find all the babies at the 133-acre wildlife park.

The "Meet the Babies" program and the "Name Our Roo" contest are part of the zoo's efforts to spotlight the park's endangered and vulnerable species breeding programs.
