The song "Survival" from the British rock band Muse has been named as the first official song for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

"We are very excited to announce that a Muse song, 'Survival,' has been selected by the London Olympic committee to be the main official song for the London 2012 Olympic Games," the band said on its website Wednesday.

The song will be played throughout the games including when athletes enter the stadium and as the lead-in to the medal ceremonies, according to the site. Frontman Matt Bellamy "wrote the song with the Olympics in mind," and told the BBC that the track "expresses a sense of conviction and determination to win."

Bellamy formed the rock group in 1994 with band mates Dominic Howard and Chris Wolstenholme. Hailing from from the small town of Teignmouth, Devon, the band has released five studio albums and sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. Muse was also nominated for three Grammy Awards in 2011, of which they won Best Rock Album for "The Resistance."

The song will get its first play on England's Radio 1 Wednesday night and will then go on sale to the public via iTunes.

The announcement comes in the wake of the band taking part in the official torch procession in which they carried the Olympic flame through their home town on day two of the 70-day relay.

"Survival" is the first of five official Olympic songs. The next offering comes from Elton John vs. Pnau (an Australian dance music group) and will be released on July 16. Following at weekly intervals after that will be music from Delphic, the Chemical Brothers and finally Dizzee Rascal on August 6.

Olympic organizers have also revealed that there will be 13 surprise performances from different bands hidden across the 650 sport sessions during the big event. Bands include Scissor Sisters and Rizzle Kicks, with other groups remaining a secret until the performance times.
