Taking a Tumble with the Stars

While trying to tell a story through dance, Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy took a tumble

Contestants on last night's “Dancing with the Stars” were dancing emotionally; the challenge was to pick a song that told a personal story that was significant and told a tale about their past.

Enter Kirstie Alley and her dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, dancing the rumba to “Over the Rainbow.” Alley, according to MSNBC, wanted to tell the story of finding hope after despair.  The dance was off to a good enough start, until Chmerkovskiy had an apparent leg spasm. His leg buckled, and the two of them went down.

Chmerkovskiy was apologetic after the performance. “My thigh just gave out,” he said. “I’m so sorry. It has nothing to do with her.”

After the initial tumble, the pair got up and finished the set to encouraging applause. The judges were equally impressed with Alley’s dance moves. “You can’t keep good talent down,” judge Bruno Tonioli said.

Even after the positive reinforcement from both audience and panel, Alley and Chmerkovskiy only received 21 points out of a possible 30.

Former supermodel Petra Nemcova and dance partner Hines Ward won the honors for top spot of the week.
