<![CDATA[Oprah, Jimmy Fallon Star in Soap Opera]]> Tue, 16 Dec 2014 07:18:03 -0800 http://media.nbcbayarea.com/images/213*120/Fallon+Oprah+Fav+Gift.jpg

Did you know Oprah Winfrey and Jimmy Fallon starred together in a soap opera in the 1980s?

Well, not really, but the "Tonight Show" host and "Selma" star pretended to be husband and wife in a 80s soap opera comedy sketch titled "Midnight Meadows." “Meadows” featured big hair, big shoulder pads, and auto-tuned voices.

Monday's episode marked the queen of audience gift giving's first “Tonight Show” appearance, appropriately on the day that Jimmy Fallon kicked off a week of audience gift giveaways.

“Are you familiar with giving things away?” asked Fallon. “Wonder where we got that idea.”

“I’m glad, because it made the audience happy,” Winfrey said. “I can see everybody so happy.”

Winfrey chatted with Fallon about her own excitement when she would surprise audience members during the famous “Favorite Things” segments, and how she “literally” could not sleep the night before the big car giveaway.

“I was so particular about it, I even thought the bows weren’t big enough,” said Winfrey.

“If you are going to get a car, you need a giant bow,” Fallon joked.

Fallon also surprised Winfrey by gifting her dogs ugly Christmas sweaters.

"They are so cute!" she gushed.

Winfrey admitted that she missed doing her show, and revealed that she used to shake everyone’s hands after the show for the first 10 years on air. One day, an OB-GYN appointment forced her to skip the meet-and-greet after a taping, but made her realize that she had more energy to tape the second show of the day.

“That's when I started to spend time with the audience instead,” she said. “Everyday, after the show, I would sit with the audience and talk for 45 minutes.”

Fallon also talked with Winfrey about her new movie “Selma,” and asked the former talk show host how she became interested in acting. Oprah revealed that when she wanted to do the movie “The Color Purple,” her bosses at “The Oprah Winfrey Show” gave her two weeks off to work on the project -- which required a two-month commitment.

“I gave up all of my vacations for the entire duration of my contract in order to do the movie,” Winfrey said. “So when it came time to negotiate my contract, my lawyer said that I would never want to be in that position again, and that I should be my own boss. That’s how I ended up owning the show.”

<![CDATA[Jimmy Fallon and Martin Freeman Play Antler Ring Toss]]> Sat, 13 Dec 2014 05:53:59 -0800 http://media.nbcbayarea.com/images/213*120/460382136.jpg

Martin Freeman is one of Britain's busiest actors. He co-stars opposite Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. John Watson in "Sherlock." He's hosting "Saturday Night Live" this weekend. And he's been a virtual silver-screen fixture as Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit" movie trilogy.

But for all his current roles, the British actor is still most often recognized in America for his part in "Love Actually," he told Jimmy Fallon during a visit to "The Tonight Show" Friday.

"I've been asked by Americans at airports, like, 'Have you done anything besides "Love Actually"?'" said Freeman, who also garnered a Golden Globe nomination this year for his role in the FX miniseries "Fargo."

Freeman's final turn as Baggins comes Friday with the release of "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies." But he told Fallon he still regrets missing out a different magical film franchise.

"I was one of seven British actors who were not in 'Harry Potter," Freeman joked. "For a long time, it was me and six other people staring through the window like orphans."

Fallon challenged Freeman to a game of antler ring toss, in which the two competed to land rings on deer antlers attached to matching camouflage helmets. (Naturally, they were also wearing matching camouflage vests.)

"This is the entire reason I came, ring toss," Freeman said.

Fallon scored an early ringer, but both he and Freeman struggled to aim and keep their balance while wearing the top-heavy helmets.

"There's no reason you should be good at this," Fallon reassured his guest.

"And there's every reason you should be good at this!" Freeman cracked mid-toss at his host – and Fallon was, winning with two rings to Freeman's one.

Also appearing on Friday night's episode was actress Megan Mullally, who is performing in "It's Only a Play" on Broadway.

Yusuf / Cat Stevens rounded out "Tonight" with a bluesy performance of "You Are My Sunshine" – yes, the lullaby – from his new album "Tell 'Em I'm Gone."

Mark Wahlberg may be an Oscar-nominated actor, but his kids are embarrassed by the international movie star.

The actor stopped by "The Tonight Show" Wednesday to promote his new movie "The Gambler" and chatted with Jimmy Fallon about losing a lot of money playing real blackjack in Macau, China, and how he unintentionally embarrasses his kids.

“When I take my kids to school I want to give them a hug and a kiss in the playground before they go in, and my 4-year-old bolts," Wahlberg said. "I’m like, ‘I love you,’ and everybody else turns around and looks at me weird.”

His eldest daughter is following in her famous father’s footsteps, performing in several school plays. She even made an “unnoticed” appearance in Walberg’s movie “Transformers: Age of Extinction.”

"I told her no movies until she graduates," Walhberg said. "I’m trying to discourage them from going into this business, but they are going to do what they want to do."

But Wahlberg is not just an actor. The former Calvin Klein underwear model has also produced hit TV shows like HBO’s "Entourage" and "Boardwalk Empire," as well as a number of films including "The Gambler," a remake of the James Caan movie which opens in theaters on Christmas Day.

“Do you know much about gambling?” asked Fallon.

“No. But I learned to gamble in preparing for the movie,” said Wahlberg.

During a trip to Macau, China, the “mecca of gambling,” Walhberg convinced his friends and some wealthy Hong Kong businessmen to give him all of their cash so that he can play blackjack.

“I had blackjack three times and needless to say, I won a lot of money,” Walhberg said. “And like my character in the movie, I took every chip off the table, walked over to the roulette wheel, put it all on black and lost everything.”

Fallon then challenged the “Ted” actor to a high-stakes game of slapjack, which is like blackjack, but the winner of each hand gets to slap the loser across the face with a giant prosthetic hand.

“Mark, as our guest, you deal first," said Fallon.

After both players received their two cards, Wahlberg decided to "stay" and Fallon asked for another card before revealing his hand.

"I think you need to go back to math class," joked Walhberg before smacking the "Tonight Show" host in the face.

On the second round, Wahlberg went bust and Fallon overdrew on the third hand, giving each player a chance to nail the other one with their prosthetic hand.

In the fourth hand, neither one went over 21, but Wahlberg won the overall game and a chance to hit Fallon one more time in the face.

"How about both at the same time?" said Walhberg. "It’s only fair."

"Double slap?" asked Fallon. "Ok, but then you can back hand me as well."

Brian Williams and Jimmy Fallon tackled President Barack Obama’s executive action on immigration by “Slow Jamming” the news on Tuesday night’s episode of “The Tonight Show.”

Announced two weeks ago, Obama’s broad executive action allows as many as five million undocumented immigrants to stay in the U.S., including the undocumented parents of children born in the country.

With help from Tariq of The Roots, Williams and Fallon explained the news to an R&B beat.

The “Nightly News" anchor said Obama’s plan provides “a path to citizenship for those who meet certain criteria, thus giving immigrants a new way to enter our country.”

“Aw yeah, President Obama is taking a hard stance on immigration,” Fallon said in a low voice. "You can't go through the back door."

Williams is also celebrating his 10th anniversary as the "Nightly News” anchor.
