It's here! 2009 is finally here! Good riddance to 2008... the year where everything went down the toilet. THIS year will be different! THIS is the year I'll lose weight, be healthy, have personal time, volunteer, get debt under control, get promoted...
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Let's take it one step at a time here.
Resolutions are great. After all, if you strive for nothing, that is usually what you'll get. So, strive away. But be realistic when it comes to goal-setting and focus your attention on a plan to achieve your goals.
It's great to say you want to lose 20 pounds, but you can't wake up one morning and lose weight. How do you intend to do it? What are the behaviors you need to master for the end result of weight loss? Make THOSE your resolutions. For example, you can exercise 30 extra minutes each week and eat 5 servings of fruits and veggies each day. Focus on those. And as you go, check in with yourself, reward yourself for your successes and learn from your mistakes.
Many people use mistakes as an excuse to fall of their resolution wagon. And THAT's a mistake. You're going to make mistakes. We all do. The important thing is to turn them into opportunities. Ask yourself:
- Can you correct the mistake? If you've just eaten half a chocolate cake, the answer is no. (Please, no purging.)
- Can you learn from the mistake? Using the chocolate cake example... did you go to a dessert party hungry? Were you stressed? Did you have a little too much to drink and decide a little more wouldn't hurt? Take a look at the triggers and map out a way to deal with them next time.
