Smoking inside apartments now illegal in Belmont.

Beginning today, residents of the city of Belmont who live in  multi-unit buildings will not be allowed to smoke inside their homes,  according to Code Enforcement Officer Kirk Buckman.

The city's ordinance, adopted in November 2007, prohibits smoking  in apartments, condominiums and townhouses that share a common floor and  ceiling, Buckman said.

Landlords will also be required to include no-smoking provisions  in new and renewed leases, city officials said. Single-family houses will not  be affected by the ordinance.

"It goes both ways," Buckman said of the public's reaction to the  smoking ban. "You get some people that very pro and some that are against  it," he said.

"The feedback I've received so far has been positive," he added.

The city hosted a workshop in October to inform the public of the  ordinance and answer questions, according to Buckman.

In addition to banning smoking in multi-unit residential  buildings, smoking was already prohibited in public spaces and on city  properties, Buckman said.

Non-compliance can result in a $100 fine, according to Buckman.
