NBC Bay Area's Sysco Investigative Series Wins National Emmy Award

SAN JOSE, CA – September 30, 2015 – An NBC Bay Area investigation into Sysco Corporation and food safety has won a national News & Documentary Emmy Award. The investigative series "Inside Sysco: Exposing North America's Food Sheds" was honored with the investigative reporting award in the category of outstanding regional news story during a ceremony in New York City Monday evening. Named on the award are Vicky Nguyen, Matt Goldberg, Kevin Nious, Jeremy Carroll, Felipe Escamilla, David Paredes and Mark Villarreal.

“Our news team is committed to making a positive difference in the Bay Area and its great to see them get this much deserved recognition,” said Rich Cerussi, President and General Manager of NBC Bay Area. “The investigation into Sysco Foods is just one example of the important work that our investigative unit does each and every day to make the Bay Area a better place to live.”

The investigation, which has also won a Gerald Loeb Award, Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award, Scripps Howard Foundation award, a Gracie award, a Press Club award as well as seven other regional awards, exposed Sysco’s longstanding practice of storing raw meat, dairy, and produce inside dirty, unrefrigerated, storage sheds. As a result of NBC Bay Area’s investigation, Sysco halted the practice immediately and later settled a consumer protection lawsuit with the state of California for $19.4 million.

Now in its 36th year, the News & Documentary Emmy Awards are presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in recognition of excellence in American national news and documentary programming.
