Secretary of State Hillary Clinton returned to work just three days after undergoing surgery to repair her broken right elbow.

The nation's top diplomat sported a new cast when she returned to work at the State Department yesterday and entered a side door at the White House to avoid photographers when she attended a meeting in the Oval Office, an administration official told the New York Daily News.

Clinton broke her elbow when she took a spill in the basement of the State Department on her way to the White House last week. She underwent two-hour surgery at George Washington University Hospital last Friday.

"Secretary Clinton appreciates the professionalism and kindness she received from the medical team who treated her this evening and looks forward to resuming her full schedule soon," her chief of staff, Cheryl Mills, said after the accident.

The injury forced Clinton to scrap her plans to attend meetings with her counterparts from around the globe in Italy and Greece this week. She was to meet with the Group of Eight to talk about Iran, the Middle East and the war in Afghanistan. She also had to bow out of a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe where the Russia-Georgia will be discussed.

In her place, Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg said he will attend meetings in Greece. The undersecretary of state for political affairs, William Burns, will rep the U.S. for the Group of Eight foreign ministers meeting in Italy.

Clinton also missed a joint press conference last week with Angelina Jolie to mark World Refugee Day.
