Gas Prices Reach Lowest Level in More Than Four Years

Gas prices nationwide are at their lowest level in more than four years, with the average price of gas at just $2.31 a gallon.

In 33 states, prices at some stations have dipped below $2 a gallon.

GasBuddy.com reports the cheapest cities include:

  • Dallas at $1.99
  • Tulsa at $1.95
  • Kansas City at $1.92

In the Bay Area, prices are not as low, but they are definitely taking a dip.

In San Francisco, the average cost of gas is $2.85 a gallon. In Oakland and San Jose, it is $2.70 a gallon.

Booming U.S. oil production has helped keep gas prices cheap. Also, American gas consumption has dropped to 40-year lows because of more fuel efficient cars and more people opting for public transit.

Analysts said there is also Saudi Arabia to thank for easing the pain at the pump.

"Saudi Arabia is trying to undermine U.S. shale oil production, which has risen due to the high oil prices," Oil and gas analyst Andrew Lipow said. "And they have geo-political reasons to undermine Iran and Russia, plus the violence we've seen in the Middle East."

That competition could keep gas prices down for months or even years to come.
