Pregnant Woman Shot, Baby Delivered at Hospital

The gunman opened fire on the woman in a South El Monte driveway

Police searched Wednesday for a man who shot a pregnant woman in a South El Monte driveway.

The woman remained hospitalized after doctors delivered her newborn via emergency C-section.

A man who fired several rounds in the 1900 block of Merced Avenue about 10 p.m. Tuesday while a 25-year-old woman was standing outside a home, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

"She was approached by a suspect, and the suspect fired several rounds at the victim, striking her several times," said LA County Sheriff's Lt. Loy McBride.

Kendra Flores, 7-months pregnant, was taken to the hospital and her baby was delivered.

"The baby was obviously delivered prematurely," McBride said.

Both the mother and the baby were in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon, hospital officials said.

Neighbors reported hearing several rounds fired.

"Seven times in a row," resident Tien Chang said. "Just non-stop firing."

The gunman left the scene in a dark-colored sedan.

"It's sad that they haven't caught this guy, and this guy would actually do something to a pregnant lady," neighbor Shantal Galicia said.

Details regarding a motive were not available.

Hetty Chang contributed to this report.

Correction: An earlier version of this article indicated the victim was seated in a vehicle at the time of the attack.
