Missing Bay Area Snowboarder Found Safe

25-year old goes missing in backcountry near Castle Peak in Nevada County

A missing San Francisco snowboarder has been found safe, officials said late Tuesday.

Abraham Finkelstein went missing in the Sierra backcountry after being separated from his father during a storm on Monday. He spent the night in the cold, but was able to keep himself warm in a makeshift shelter.

Officials said he was able to find a house and called for help.

Finkelstein, 25, was snowboarding in Nevada County with his father in the Castle Peak area of Donner Pass on the other side of Interstate 80 from the Boreal Mountain Resort when he got lost, according to the Nevada County Sheriff's Department.

They started hiking up a hill toward Peter Grub Hut when Monday's storm hit. The pair became separated when Finkelstein's father became tired and his son wanted to "make another run," KCRA reported.

The father made it back to their car by 5 p.m. His son did not.
