A cross will be added back to the LA County seal in an effort to make it historically accurate.
LA County Supervisors voted 3-2 in favor of the change on Tuesday, which will restore the cross to the top of the San Gabriel Mission on the county seal.
Supervisors Mike Antonovich and Don Knabe had requested to add the cross, saying that the seal was "artistically and architecturally inaccurate" because there was no cross.

LA County Supervisors had voted to remove the cross in September 2004 after threats of a lawsuit.
A spokesman for The American Civil Liberties Union said the move would violate the constitutional separation of church and state.
"Placing a cross, the universal symbol of Christianity, back on the seal communicates that Los Angeles County favors and endorses one religion above all others," said Hector Villagra, executive director of the ACLA of Southern California, in a statement.

"This thinly veiled attempt to smuggle the cross into the seal will fool no one; it will reopen the debate about the separation of church and state, distract officials from pressing questions, and risk the lawsuit and liability supervisors once wisely avoided," said Villagra.
