Violent crime is up 22 percent in San Francisco, according to the FBI's annual crime report, and the Bay Area's most-dangerous city is just a short ride across the Bay Bridge away.
Oakland has a crime rate of almost 20 violent crimes per 1,000 residents in 2013, about five times the state average and over double San Francisco's rate of 8.47 violent crimes per 1,000 people, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
This makes Oakland the most crime-ridden city in California, according to the FBI. It's also the second-most dangerous city in the country behind Detroit. Memphis and St. Louis follow at No. 3 and 4 respectively.
But a safe haven is not far away. In Hillsborough, there were no violent crimes reported in 2013, the newspaper noted, and in Clayton, there were only two.
Emeryville, Palo Alto, Richmond, Antioch and Vallejo were all more violent than San Francisco, according to the FBI.
Other safe cities included such metropolises as Danville, Saratoga, Foster City, Orinda, Moraga and Cupertino.
