“Marijuana Butter” Extraction Might Have Caused Calabasas Home Fire

Three men in their 20s suffered second- and third-degree burns in a fire at a home near Malibu Creek State Park Monday, authorities said.

Hazardous material teams, bomb squad units and narcotics experts were called to the scene for what investigators determined was a flash fire stemming from the extraction of highly-concentrated marijuana "butter."

The fire at 620 Crater Camp Drive was reported at 5:10 p.m., according to a Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatcher.

Witness Bryan Campbell was in the main house when a blast shattered windows in a nearby rental and a trio of injured strangers came searching for help.

"Really burned. Hair burned off, skin," Campbell recalled. "They were in a world of hurt."

"I'd say they were all present for the explosion, which must have just engulfed them all in flame, because they all arrived up there with just their underwear on," Campbell added.

The victims remained in the hospital Monday evening.
