2 Arrested in Shooting Death of 9-Year-Old Fresno Girl

Fresno police say they have arrested two men in the death of a 9-year-old girl who was shot and killed while standing with her mother in front of a self-service laundry.

Police Chief Jerry Dyer identified the suspects on Friday as 19-year-old Isaac Kordell Stafford and 22-year-old Brian Cooks. Dyer says they are allegedly rival gang members who were shooting at each other on Jan. 18 when a bullet fired by Cooks struck the girl, Janessa Ramirez.

The Fresno Bee reports the two are being held on suspicion of murder for $1 million bail each.

Janessa was in the fourth grade at a Fresno elementary school and an active member of a local church. Her death has shaken the city and the police chief attended her memorial service last week.
